The problem

In general, Endodontic treatment needs any tooth in which the pulp (nerve) has been affected and its nervous system, to the extent that the damage is not reversible.

  1. Symptoms:We usually understand that there is a serious problem with a tooth in mastication, when consuming liquids (cold or hot), when it feels like there is a pulse, but many times on its own without any stimuli. In some cases there may be edema (swelling) at some point on the face or gum resulting from tooth infection.

Endodontic treatment can be done in some cases and without pain, as long as there are appropriate diagnostic findings (e.g. x-rays, edema, severe tooth discoloration, etc.) that lead to this treatment without being there is a need for symptoms, such as pain or a severe tooth reaction to the cold.

  2. Causes leading to necrosis (infection) of the pulp (nerve):
  • Advanced caries.
  • Fracture reaching the pulp (nerve) of the tooth.
  • Endodontic abscess, which may be caused either by contamination of the pulp by some microorganisms through the tooth or by periodontal infection due to periodontitis.
  • Aseptic necrosis from injury.
  1. Types of endodontic treatment according to the teeth:
  • Endodontic treatment of single teeth. This is about teeth that have only one root.
  • Endodontic treatment of multiple teeth. This is about teeth that have more than one root. That is 2-3-4 even 5 roots.

What is endodontic treatment

Endodontic treatment is a medical procedure in which the entire living part of the tooth that has been severely damaged is removed from the tooth and then replaced with biocompatible materials.

Endodontic treatment is a process that takes place at various stages.

In the first stage, the entire pulp (nerve) is removed from the pulp cavity and the root canal. The second stage of treatment involves cleaning and disinfecting the tooth. The third stage of the tooth treatment is completed by the filling of the root canal with special materials.

After the Endodontic treatment the work is completed with the dental filling of the tooth.

Endodontic treatment with Laser can be done as well.

The procedure of endodontic treatment

An endodontic treatment depending on the severity of the condition requires a minimum of 2 appointments to complete:

At 1st appointment:

We clean the tooth from dental caries (if any) and prepare it for the endodontic treatment.

We continue with the cleaning, disinfection and enlargement of the root canals, with special tools, medicines and Laser.

Endodontic treatment is completed when the root canals are sealed with the appropriate materials, either at this or a later appointment, depending on the severity of tooth damage and root canal contamination.

Finally we place a temporary filling which will allow us to follow the course of the endodontic treatment for a few days without final restoration.

At this stage it is important for the patient to understand that the temporary filling is not a permanent restoration, it is a temporary solution that is designed to hold for a specific period of time 1-2 weeks (after that time pieces begin to depart from the temporary filling, resulting in the discovery of the pulp chamber and microbial infection of the root canals) to monitor the course of the tooth prior to final restoration.

With temporary sealing, the tooth is weak and can break easily if pressed.

At the 2nd appointment

After the endodontic treatment is completed, the coronal part of the tooth must be permanently restored to regain the tooth’s appearance, functionality and functionality.

The final restoration should not be postponed for a long time (1-2 weeks at most), as the chances of a new infection even with tooth fracture are increased.

Endodontic treatment through the dental crown.

Many times endodontic treatment is carried out through a dental crown.

This can prevent the destruction of an entire restoration consisting of more than three to four teeth.

Specifically, the dentist simply makes a hole the crown as if it were a normal tooth without a crown on it, disintegrates and seals it normally as an intact tooth.

This way you save enough time, money and hassle for the patient.

Postoperative stage

The patient is likely to feel some pain for 2-3 days which is perfectly normal.

This pain will slowly decrease day by day and so in 10-15 days the tooth will be ready for the final blockage.

In most, if not all, cases dental crowns must be placed within three to six months of the end of the endodontic treatment, thus increasing the life of the tooth.

The result of endodontic treatment

The patient will feel relief and depending on the treatment plan the tooth will be prepared for dental filling or appropriate prosthetic repair.

Endodontic treatment as a medical practice is of great value because it essentially saves a tooth that is doomed to be extracted.

If the tooth is not saved and needs to be removed, then it will either need to be replaced with an implant or the two adjacent teeth to be prepared for the placement of a dental bridge.

If neither of these two is done and the area left with the tooth is missing, the adjacent teeth will bend, the tooth that closes with the one lost above or below will passively suspend and inevitably all this side in the chewing because the patient will chew on the other hand which is best suited.

Many times endodontic treatment is performed through a dental crown.

This can prevent the destruction of an entire restoration consisting of more than three to four teeth.

So the dentist simply makes a hole in the dental crown as if it were a normal tooth without having a crown on it, it is endodontically treated and you normally seal it like an entire tooth.

This way you save enough time, money and hassle for the patient.
